What are some political issues I care about and Why?

The U.S. Government helps keep order in America, but it is not a perfect system. They have many problems such as debt, unemployment, education, and etc. The problems that catch my attention are mainly healthcare and the national debt.

Healthcare costs have been rising up at over twice the general rate of inflation. This worries me because many people will not be able to afford healthcare. With a staggering 40 million uninsured in America, I worry about myself for the future. The system promises us quality, ''affordable'' health care. Yet why are so many uninsured if its so affordable? Healthcare is free in Canada, everyone is insured. I think and wonder, why can't healthcare be free in America? If healthcare was free in America, all the money we pay for healthcare could go to something else such as better education or feeding more homeless people. I think about the future and think, will I be able to afford healthcare for my family and I?

The national debt is another political issue I care about. I care about this because the U.S. owes so much money to so many different countries, I wonder if those countries will ever come after us? People say we can just print more money to pay off this debt, but wouldn't price values go up and the U.S. money value go down? I worry about this issue because I feel like the U.S. will reach a danger zone of ''debt'' and we will never be able to get out of this hole that we're stuck in.

Although the U.S. Government may seem like it has everything under control, it actually has many issues to resolve and find solutions for. The issues that I find important to resolve are healthcare and the national debt.

  1. Health care is getting expensive, that's why so many people decide to go uninsured. They lose their job and cant afford it, the 40 million uninsured will just keep on growing. But if they created more jobs, what would happen then? Would health care be affordable for everyone? The national debt is a major issue! And it just keep on getting worse with the war that is going on. America is always the first to go and aide another countries in need, but would they do they same for us? It could also help the debt if so many people did not get over paid. Good job!

  2. In a universal healthcare system, no one is uninsured... Its not affordable for the people who are uninsured. But if you are it is affordable. And also, the only way to have free healthcare is to pay taxes. Nothing is free. The money spent on healthcare won't go to anything else.
But, are you a supporter of socialized healthcare?

  3. I also am very concerned with the national debt. It is a major issue and needs a solution immediately. The US can not just keep printing money; it will lead to inflation. Also, the more money we owe other countries, the more power they have over us almost. Our country could potentially be in grave danger if we do not invest in having a more credible economy. Do you think the next president will take serious action into working out this situation? Or, do you think it could take many years until the national debt crisis is resolved?

  4. Hey Tom. I am also very concerned with the national debt because of what it is doing the country's credit rating. Worst of all, our generation is going to be responsible for paying most of it back through taxes that will continue to rise. I was wondering if you think countries will stop lending us money, knowing they may never get it paid back?

  5. Great post! I agree that the United States should move to socialized medicine. This is how I see it: when you call 911, you get a police car, a firetruck, and/or an ambulance. Only the ambulance has a fee. Healthcare should not be about companies trying to make a profit. It should be about giving the best possible service to people. If we can have Medicare for seniors, we can have free healthcare for all Americans.

About the debt: I also agree that it is a big problem. It is certainly not good that China owns 1 out of 10 dollars in our debt. The main problem with the debt is that as we struggle to deal with it, it becomes more expensive to pay interest. I think that we need to both raise taxes (especially the Bush tax cuts) and cut some spending to reduce it. Are you more in favor of cutting spending or raising taxes?

Also, this is an interesting video to explain the current crisis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7Xtj04QiQg

  6. I agree Tom were in a black whole of debt I can't see us getting out of in the next fifty years. The U.S. needs to stop raising the debt ceiling and make major military cuts before we can look at any other issues. I don't know when we will get out of this crisis but I know it won't be soon.

  7. Tom, the national debt surely is a very large issue in America today. It just shocks me to see how much money we owe other countries, but continue to lend aid to others in need. It seems as if we have no intentions at the moment to pay anyone back. How soon do you think countries will come after us for money that theyre owed? Also, if America is engaged in a war over our debt, do you feel that we will be victories considering our military is considered to be very powerful?

  8. "The money spent on healthcare won't go to anything else."

Tristan is correct. There are no free lunches. More government control of the health care system would mean more need for tax revenue or more borrowing. If a government run health system (more govt control than currently exists) were more efficient than our current system, then there would be savings. Some question more govt control of health care on philosophical grounds, others on political grounds, and some worry about the economics of a govt run system.
